Abstract:Howtoprotectanddeveloplocaltraditionalcultureisanessentialproblemfacedbyhistoriccities.Accordingtoculturalecology,cultureisdeemedasanorganismintheecologicalsystem,whichwillchangewiththeenvironment.Thisresearch,takingtheShichahaihistoricdistrictofBeijingasanexample,discusseshowlo-calculturechangesinresponsetourbanrenewalandglobalization.

Shichahaihistoricdistrictholdsthelargestlandandpopulationofallthe25protecteddistrictsofhistoryandcultureinBeijing.ThelocalcultureofShichahaiisrepresentativeofBeijingculturel,whichisaconbina-tionofroyalculture,celebritycultureandcivilculture.Thelocalculturehereisakindof“recreationculture”.Infact,ShichahaiareahasbeenknownasacommercialdistrictandarecreationdistrictsincetheMingDy-nasty.Allthepeople,boththerichandthepoor,canhavefuninthesameplace,andthismakeShichahaisospecialcomparedtotheotherpartsofBeijing.TheresearchresultshowsthatthetraditionalcharacteristicsoflocalcultureinShichahaiarefadingaway.Furthermore,aswefindfromthesurvey,theparticipantsofcurrentculture(ownersandcustomersofthebars)arenotlocalpeople.Thereisalackofcommunicationbetweenlocalcultureandcurrentculture.Thisresearchalsofindsthatforeignculturewillchangeitselfinordertoadapttothenewenvironment.

Finally,thispaperputforwardsomesuggestionsforreconstructingthelocalcultureofShichahai,thatistoprotectthematerialenvironment,developcharacteristicculturalindustryandkeeptheoriginalsocialnetworksandlifestyle.
