表示意外、惊异等情绪，与what, how, why, who连用，如是疑问句，则不需回答，相当于修辞

性问句。

Should we stand by and do nothing?=we shouldn’t stand by and do nothing.

May well+ do 和may/might as well do

May well do: have a good reason to

He may well be proud of his son. 大可以以他的儿子为荣。

She may well say so.

may as well 表建议，―还是…的好‖―还是…‖

No one will eat the food; it might just as well be thrown away.

You might as well throw your money into the sea as lend it to him.

You may as well stay where you are.

All the pubs are closing. We may as well go home.

Might as well 有时有―还不如…‖的含义，如：
