高三英语阅读理解限时训练(10)
A
There are a lot of things that happen to me in China but would certainly never happen in the US. One of those things is being called “strong”.
The first time was last December. I was walking across the high school campus in Guangzhou where I taught when a student in a gray scarf waved hello. I smiled and waved back, but then she stopped and called my name. “You’re so strong!” She smiled and pointed at what appeared to be my arm.
I looked down at my arms. let’s get one thing clear: I’m a very skinny guy. Once, while rehearsing for a high school talent show, I was told by the teacher in charge that I couldn’t participate in the men’s shirtless dance routine because my visible rig cage(胸腔) would frighten the audience.
“I’m so what?” “You’re so strong!” repeated. “Um, thanks!” I didn’t know what else to say, so we both waved goodbye.
The next morning I stepped into my oral English classroom only to be greeted instantly by a unanimous(异口同声的) “Waaa!” of shock and admiration. “What?” I asked. “You’re so strong!” shouted a boy from the back of the class.
“Okay, will someone tell me what that means?” I was curious as to the real reason for such praise. So I turned to the monitor, gesturing for him to speak.
“We just mean, you look very strong today,” he offered earnestly.
“What?! You mean like this?” I curled(卷起) my arm like a body-builder.
“No! But it’s so cold, and you’re only wearing a short-sleeve shirt.”
Oh, I got it. My “strength” had less to do with my muscle and more to do with my apparent ignorance of the cold weather.

Every New Year brings renewed expectation fro change, for a better life and for a better you. That’s a wonderful thing, because this fresh start gives us a chance to reinvent our lives and ourselves. Here’s how.
Let go
Many times we are held back by our previous failures, emotions and barriers. This is all old baggage. Let everything unhappy from the past go. Let go of failures. Let go of fears you’ve built up. Let go of your ideas about what your life had to be like. Let go of long-held beliefs and habits which seem to be burdens to you.
Clear away distraction(分心)
Clear away email, your favourite blogs and news websites. Clear away the Iphone or Blackberry, and clear away all the that pull at your attention. In fact, if you can, shut off the Internet for a while. You can come back to it after you take a break.
Decide what matters most today
Forget about your goals for all of this year. Instead, decide what you want to do today. What matters most to you and your life? What are you most passionate about right now? What excites you? What gives you the most fulfillment? Often the answer would be in creating something, making something new, helping others, becoming a better person, and working on a project that you will be proud of. But whatever you answer, have it clear in your mind at the beginning of the day.
Reinvent yourself every day
Every day, you are reborn. Reinvent yourself and your life. Do what matters most to you. It might be the same thing that mattered most yesterday, or it might not be. That isn’t important. What’s important is today—right now! Be passionate, and be happy!
You’ll have a fresh start every single day—not just on January 1 of a new year.

When you hear the word “recycling”, what comes to your mind? The color green or global warming?
What if I were to tell you there is a dark side of recycling? A type of recycling that does more than good. The dark side of recycling has nothing to do with the environment but rather has a lot to do with the recycling of ideas.
Environmental unrest isn’t the only trouble we must face. Idea pollution is quickly becoming widespread across the online world.
