Abstract:Theprocessofsoildegradationinmountainouskarstregionshasbeentheresearchfocusofsoilsci2enceandecologyinChinaforthelastdecade.TakinganexampleofkarstsoilsfromGuanling2Zhengfengarea,southwesternGuizhou,China,changesofsoiltotalandavailablepoolofmajornutrients,microbialbiomasscarbonandsoilrespiration,activitiesofmajorsoilenzymesinadegradation2reclamationsequencewerestudied.Thesoilsofsurface0~5cmandsubsurface5~25cmwerecollectedfromselectedeco2tesserasofdegradedabandonlands,corncultivatedlands,vegetationrecoverylandsandwell2protectedvegetationlandsrespectively.Totalpoolofsoilmajornutrientsshowedsensitivechangeswithvegetationcover,accompanyingasimilarchangeofsoilmicrobialbi2omasscarbon.Vegetationrecoveryresultedinaremarkablechangeofsoiltotalnutrientpoolandincreasedsoilmi2crobialbiomasscarbon.However,vegetationrecoveryfor3~6yearslongdidnotdriveasignificantchangeina2vailablepoolofthenutrientsaswellasthemicrobialrespirationquotientandsoilenzymeactivities.Theresultsim2plicatedthattherecoveryofavailablenutrientpoolandmicrobialfunctioningcouldbeareliableindicatorforeco2systemshealthofthekarstsoilsunderdifferentdegreesoflanddegradationandvegetationrecovery.Itissuggestedthatnotonlytotalnutrientpoolandmicrobialbiomasscarbonbutalsothemicrobialfunctioningindicatorsasmicro2bialrespirationquotient,activitiesofkeysoilenzymesshouldbetakenintoaccountwhileevaluatingtheintensityoflanddegradationand/ortheeffectofvegetationrecoveronsoilqualityandecosystemfunctioningforthekarstlandsinSouthwestChina.
