“The Netherlands has always been a very child-centered society,” said Paul Vangeert, professor of developmental psychology at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. “In particular, there is a lot of focus on young children.” In his opinion, Dutch families are open and communicate and parents and children can talk about almost anything.
“Social factors play an important role in how they look at their lives. Dutch children generally have a good relationship with their parents, families and friends,” researcher Wilma Vollenbergh told the Dutch media. “Another factor is the Netherlands’ prosperity and limited social inequality,” she added.
The HBSC report showed support from family and classmates protects young people from negative influences. Children who find it easy to communicate with their parents and peers often feel healthier.
