9.2.2Thefollowinginformationisintendedtofacilitatetheuseofthisspeci cation:

9.2.2.1Thecalibrationstandardsde nedin9.2.3through9.2.5areconvenientstandardsforcalibrationofnondestructivetestingequipment.Thedimensionsofsuchstandardsarenottobeconstruedastheminimumsizesofimperfectionsdetectablebysuchequipment.

9.2.2.2Theultrasonictestingreferredtointhisspeci cationiscapableofdetectingthepresenceandlocationofsigni cantlongitudinallyorcircumferentiallyorientedimperfections;however,differenttechniquesneedtobeemployedforthedetectionofdifferentlyorientedimperfections.Ultrasonictest-ingisnotnecessarilycapableofdetectingshort,deepimper-fections.

9.2.2.3Theeddycurrentexaminationreferencedinthisspeci cationhasthecapabilityofdetectingsigni cantdiscon-tinuities,especiallyoftheshortabrupttype.

9.2.2.4The uxleakageexaminationreferredtointhisspeci cationiscapableofdetectingthepresenceandlocationofsigni cantlongitudinallyortransverselyorienteddisconti-nuities.Theprovisionsofthisspeci cationonlyrequirelongitudinalcalibrationfor uxleakage.Differenttechniquesneedtobeemployedforthedetectionofdifferentlyorientedimperfections.

9.2.2.5Thehydrostatictestreferredtoin8.2hasthecapabilityof ndingimperfectionsofasizepermittingthetest uidtoleakthroughthetubewallandmaybeeithervisuallyseenordetectedbyalossofpressure.Hydrostatictestingisnot

necessarilycapableofdetectingverytightthrough-the-wallimperfectionsorimperfectionsthatextendanappreciabledistanceintothewallwithoutcompletepenetration.

9.2.2.6Apurchaserinterestedinascertainingthenature(type,size,location,andorientation)ofimperfectionsthatarecapableofbeingdetectedinthespeci capplicationoftheseexaminationsisdirectedtodiscussthiswiththemanufacturerofthetubularproduct.

9.2.3Forultrasonictesting,thecalibrationreferencenotchesshallbeattheoptionofthemanufacturer,andshallbeanyoneofthethreecommonnotchshapesshowninPracticeE213.Thedepthofnotchshallnotexceed12.5%ofthespeci edwallthicknessofthepipeor0.004in.[0.1mm],whicheveristhegreater.

9.2.4Foreddycurrenttesting,thecalibrationpipeshallcontain,attheoptionofthemanufacturer,anyoneofthefollowingcalibrationstandardstoestablishaminimumsensi-tivitylevelforrejection.

9.2.4.1DrilledHole—Thecalibrationpipeshallcontainthreeholesspaced120°apartorfourholesspaced90°apart,sufficientlyseparatedlongitudinallytoensureseparatelydis-tinguishableresponses.Theholesshallbedrilledradiallyandcompletelythroughthepipewall,carebeingtakentoavoiddistortionofthepipewhiledrilling.Dependentuponthenominalpipesize,thecalibrationpipeshallcontainthefollowinghole:
