It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometres away from home to work. On arrival he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labour, he returned to find his bike gone.

The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60hour weeks to support our young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries, saving us from having to walk a long distance from where we live.

I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, and then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It is really an honour that a complete stranger would go out of his way for someone he has never met before.

People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had an amazing effect on our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.

A. The man's job was bike racing.

B. It was their only possession(财产).

C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed.

D. They used it for work and daily life.

2. We can infer from the text that________.

A. the couple worked 60 hours a week

B. people were busy before Christmas

C. life was hard for the young family

D. the stranger brought over the bike

3. How did people get to know the couple's problem?

A. From radio broadcasts.

B. From a newspaper.

C. From TV news.

D. From a stranger.

4. What do the couple learn from their experience?

A. Strangers are usually of little help.

B. One should take care of his bike.

Parents who smoke often open a window or turn on a fan to clear the air of secondhand smoke, but experts now have found another smokingrelated threat(威胁) to children's health: thirdhand smoke.

That's the expression which is used to describe the invisible(看不见的) yet poisonous(有毒的) gases that stick to smokers' hair and clothing and other things in the room. These gases stay long after smoke has been cleared from the room. Young children can get them on their hands, especially if they're playing on the floor.

“Everyone knows that secondhand smoke is bad, but they don't know about this,”said Dr Jonathan P. Winickoff, the lead author of the study at Harvard Medical School.

“When their kids are out of the house, they might smoke. Or they smoke in the car. They think it's okay because the secondhand smoke isn't getting to their kids,”Dr Winickoff continued. “We needed an expression to describe these poisons that can't be seen.”

Thirdhand smoke is what one smells when a smoker gets in an elevator after going outside for a cigarette, or in a hotel room where people smoked. “Your nose isn't lying,” he said. “The smell is so bad that your brain is telling you,‘Get away.’”

But far fewer people realized the risks of thirdhand smoke. Since the expression is so new, the researchers asked people if they agreed with the statement that “breathing air in a room today where people smoked yesterday can harm the health of children”. Only 65 per cent of nonsmokers and 43 per cent of smokers agreed with that statement.

“The central message here is that simply closing the kitchen door to take a smoke is not protecting the kids from the effects of that smoke,”said another doctor. “There are substances in the thirdhand smoke, and they are a cancer risk for anybody of any age who comes close to them.”

The fact that thirdhand smoke is harmful will most probably lead to a strict

smoking ban at home.

1. You're experiencing thirdhand smoke if you________ .

A. smell something strange in a hotel room

B. live in a house which a smoker will move in

C. enter a kitchen whose door was closed by a smoker

D. stay in an office where someone smoked last night

2. What do Dr Winickoff's words in Paragraph 5 mean?

A. If people smoked in a room, you can tell it.

B. Your nose sometimes gives wrong information.

C. If you want to smoke, your nose will warn you.

D. Sometimes your brain can tell lies.

3. From the passage, we learn that________ .

A. the substances in thirdhand smoke are sure to cause cancer

B. most people know the bad sides of thirdhand smoke

C. thirdhand smoke is worse than secondhand smoke

D. smoking may not be allowed at home at all

4. The main idea of the passage is ________ .

Nearly a quarter of a century after a German boy threw a message in a bottle off a ship in the Baltic Sea, he's received an answer.

A 13yearold Russian, Daniil Korotkikh, was walking with his parents on a beach when he saw something lying in the sand.

“I saw that bottle and it looked interesting,” Korotkikh told the Associated Press on Tuesday, “and it looked like a German beer bottle and there was a message inside.”

It said, “My name is Frank, and I'm five years old. My dad and I are travelling on a ship to Denmark. If you find this letter, please write back to me, and I will write back to you.” The letter, dated 1987, included an address in the town of

Coesfeld.

The boy in the letter, Frank Uesbeck, is now 29. His parents still live at the letter's address.

The Russian boy and the German man met each other earlier this month through an Internet video link. The Russian boy said he did not believe that the bottle actually spent 24 years in the sea. He believed it had been hidden under the sand where he found it for a long time.

Uesbeck was especially happy that he was able to have a positive effect on a life of a young person far away from Germany. “It's really a wonderful story,” he said. “And who knows? Perhaps one day we will actually be able to arrange a meeting in person.”

1. What is this passage mainly about?

A. A message in a bottle.

B. A beautiful beer bottle.

C. Travelling on a ship.

D. Meeting an old friend.

2. When the German boy threw the bottle into the sea,________.

A. he was going back home

B. he was already 29 years old

C. he was walking with his parents on a beach

D. he was travelling to Denmark by ship with his dad

3. According to the text, which of the following statements is TRUE?

D. Daniil Korotkikh and Frank Uesbeck have got in touch with each other.

4. Why was Uesbeck very happy when he got the information in the beer bottle?

A. Because he could have a new friend.

B. Because the two boys could surf the Internet together.

C. Because he finally got what he had lost.

D. Because he could have a positive influence on a life of a young person.

Exploit your parking space

An unused parking space or garage can make money. If you live near a city centre or an airport, you could make anything up to £200 or £300 a week. Put an advertisement(广告) for free on Letpark or Atmyhousepark.

Rent(出租) a room

Spare room? Not only will a lodger(房客) earn you an income, but also, thanks to the governmentbacked “rent a room” programme, you won't have to pay any tax(税) on the first £4,500 you make per year. Try advertising your room on Roomspare or Roommateeasy.

Make money during special events

Don't want a fulltime lodger? Then rent on a shortterm basis. If you live in

the capital, renting a room out during the Olympics or other big events could bring in money. Grashpadder can advertise your space.

Live on set

Renting your home out as a “film set” could earn you hundreds of pounds a day, depending on the film production company and how long your home is needed. A quick search on the Internet will bring up dozens of online companies that allow you to register(注册,登记) your home for free—but you will be charged if your home gets picked.

Use your roof

You need the right kind of roof, but some energy companies pay the cost of fixing solar equipment(around £14,000),

and let you use the energy produced for nothing. In return, they get paid for unused energy fed back into the national grid. However, you have to sign a 25year agreement with the supplier, which could prevent you from changing the roof.

5. If you earn £5,000 from renting a room in one year, the tax you need to pay will be based on ________.

A. £300 B. £500 C. £4,500 D. £5,000

6. Where can you put an advertisement to rent out a room during a big event?

A. On Letpark. B. On Roomspare.

C. On Grashpadder. D. On Roommateeasy.

7. If you want to use energy free, you have to________.

A. sign an agreement with the government

B. pay around £14,000 for the equipment

C. sell the roof to some energy companies

D. keep the roof unchanged within 25 years

8. For whom is the text most probably written?
