It’s hard to find Alice Munro in the media. Even after she won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Canadian writer just appeared for a quick interview and then dropped out of sight. On Dec 29, she still didn't seek the spotlight(聚光灯)when she was named one of the five Women of the Year by the Financial Times.
In Munro's eyes, ordinary lives always hide larger dramas. So she records what we casually think of as the everyday actions of normal people. She often focuses on life in her hometown, a small village in Ontario which she is most familiar with. She writes about the ordinary
things in the village-fox forming, trees filled in the Ontario wilderness, poor country alcohol and long last illnesses. Above all, she talks about girls and women who have seemingly ordinary lives but struggle against daily misfortune.
She has a special talent for uncovering the extraordinary in the ordinary. These are ordinary people, ordinary stories, but she has the magic. Her precise language, depth of detail and the logic of her storytelling have made her stories inviting.
Runaway, one of Munro’s representative works, is a good example of her writing style. One of the stories centers on the life of an ordinary woman Carla, who lives in a small Canadian town with her husband Clark. The story slowly forms a picture of Carla, trapped in a bad marriage, her unhappiness building into desperation until she decided to flee. The story of Carla is a story of the power and betrayals of love. It is about lost children and lots of chances that we can all find in life, There is pain beneath the surface, like a needle in the heart.
Since she published her first collection of short stories in 1968, Munro has won many awards, with the Nobel Prize being her biggest honor. On Oct 10, 2013, the Nobel Prize committee named Munro the “master of the contemporary short story”.

Have you ever seen harmful robots
refuse to die, no matter how fiercely
people fight back? As is known, it is
always the case in some of the scariest
science fiction.
Now, science fiction has changed
into science fact. For the first time,
researchers have created a robotic machine that can stand a beating and keep on walking. Developed by scientists from Cornell University and the University of Vermont, the new
robot looks like a spider with four
legs. Until now, even the most advanced
robot was almost certain to break down
when damaged. That’s because its inside computer simply doesn’t know how to operate the machine after its shape has changed.
To get around this problem, the spidery robot’s developers equipped their invention with eight motors and two sensors that read how the machine is tilting(倾斜). The motors and sensors all provide electrical signals to the machine’s software.
Using this information, the system follows a new procedure to figure out the machine’s shape at any given moment. The program chooses from among 100,000 possible arrangements of parts.
From there, the computer considers a wide variety of possible next
steps, and it calculates how best to move the robot forward the longest possible distance, before trying to move again.
“The new strategy is a major advance in robotics”, Professor Skehan, a scientist in Cornell University says, “and it’s far from scary”. The technology may someday help researchers create better artificial arms and legs that give new freedom to people who lack them. The new knowledge might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space.
“Designing robots that can adapt to changing environments and can compensate(补偿) for damage has been a difficult problem,” says neuroscientist Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in Bloomington. “This work provides a new way toward solving this important problem.”
25. What’s the most important characteristic of the new robot?
A. Its shape is like a spider with four legs. B. It can repair itself and move again after damaged.
C. It is operated by its inside computer. D. It is certain to change the direction when damaged.
26. It can be learnt from the passage that ________.
A. animals have no sense of place in space
B. people have difficulty in figuring out how to get to his destination
C. scientists don’t understand people’s ability of location
D. scientists want to know where people and animals are going
27. We can infer from the view of Professor Skehan that ________.
A. the new technology will help people have a better sense of space
B. the new technology will help people grow new arms and legs
C. designing robots can help to be adaptable to the changing of the environment
D. the new technology will have some medical benefits
28. The purpose of the author to write this article is to ________.
A. introduce a new robot that will not die B. discuss science fiction and new invention
C. recommend the latest invention D. explain the
relationship between robot and medicine

London taxis, with their friendly drivers who actually know where they are going, are ranked best in the world, according to an annual taxi poll(调查).
The survey by travel website http:// found London taxis, despite being the most expensive, beat rivals across the globe to head the list for the third consecutive years, scoring a total of 59 percent in votes on several categories by travelers.

Taxis in Sydney fell short of the top 10, scoring badly in the areas of value for money, availability and knowledge of the area.
The survey for http://, part of the Expedia group, was conducted among over 1,900 travelers between May 11-28 this year.

How to test best
It’s back to school, which means it’s back to tests. Which might also mean it’s back to being majorly stressed out . 36 Here are some simple ways to prepare thoroughly for tests.
Schedule study time.
Trying to do all studying the night before a test makes it impossible to master all the material. 37 Instead, prepare for a test by scheduling study time each day for several days before. Use your time wisely. 38 Also, make sure you have all the supplies you need to study so you don’t lose focus.
While studying, be sure to make regular short breaks. Get a snack, take a bathroom break or play a quick computer game when it feels as if your brain is about to explode. 39
Studying with a parent or friends can help you understand the material better and to learn from one another. Have every person or pair take a part of the material, and come up with questions to quiz the group.
Keep the group small. Have everyone take turns as the group leader, who will assign the material, and make sure that conversation stays on what is being studied.
Don’t forget last-minute preparation.
Have your sharpened pencils and other things in your bag ready the night before the test. It’s important to get a good night’s sleep and then eating a healthy breakfast the next morning. 40
Also, studying all the way up until test time can only create more anxiety. Stop studying an hour beforehand.
A. Form a study group. B. Stay cool before the test.
C. It doesn’t have to be this way. D. This will help you store important information.
E. This way, both your mind and body are fully prepared. F. Before studying , clear your desk so you can concentrate. G.
