Reading I A student of African wildlife

Par1 Teaching Material:
I. Teaching Material
Ahead of this unit, the students have learnt how to describe and analyze a person in Unit 5 Book1 “Nelson Mandela – a modern hero”. Therefore, it’s easy for them to understand the general idea of the text. This text mainly tells us the story of a great woman scientist named Jane Goodall. This lesson is the first section of the unit and the text is the most important teaching material in this lesson, which extends the main topic “Women of Achievement” and contains most of the vocabulary and grammar points that students should learn in this unit. II. Teaching aims:
·Knowledge aims:
1. to understand the main idea; to scan for the needed information; and grasp the details;
2. to improve the students’ organizing and using skills of English as the second language. ·Ability aims:
1. to improve the ability of self-learning and cooperative learning method; and use such kind of ability to gain and deal with language information.
2. to foster the students’ questioning spirit to improve their ability of analyzing and solving
problems.
·Emotion aims:
By reading the text, students can learn from Jane Goodall in at least two aspects: one is the human way to study animal; the other is that it was her great personality-universal love and mercy that made her successful.
II. Teaching important points:
1. to help students get a general idea of the whole passage, and some detailed information and language points as well.
2. to understand the deep meaning of Jane Goodall’ spirits.
Teaching difficult points:
1. the students use their own words to express their own ideas;
2. subject-verb agreement; the usage of –ing form, the usage of “spend” and inversion.
Part 2 Teaching Methods:
Communicative language teaching method;Task-Based Language teaching method.
Part 3 Studying Methods:
Task-based; self-dependent; cooperative learning method.
Part 4 Teaching Procedure:
Step I Warming up and Lead-in. (4 minutes)
1. Guessing game
In this step, I will describe two great women and let the students guess who they are according to my description.
a. She was the only female monarch of China, and remains the most remarkable, influential and mysterious woman in Chinese history.→Empress Wu Zetian (624 - 705) in Tang Dynasty;
b. She was an inventor and a scientist from Poland. She went to Paris and studied physics and

chemistry there. She is the only woman scientist who was awarded two Nobel Prizes. On July 4, 1934, she died in Paris, killed by her own experiments. She died of radiation poisoning. →Marie Curie (1867-1934)
Purpose of design: “Interest is the best teacher.” Therefore, at the very beginning of the class, I
should spark the students’ mind to focus on the centre topic.
2. Lead-in
In this part, I will let them look at 4 pictures on page 2, there are 6 great women of the world, Ms. Song Qingling, Elizabeth Fry, Jody Williams, Joan of Arc, Lin Qiaozhi and the last one Jane Goodall and let students glance the statements below the pictures.
Purpose of design: After finish this, the students will be eager to know something about Jane Goodall and the chimps and this is the very time to naturally lead the class into step 2.
Step II Reading for information: skimming and scanning (totally 15 minutes)
Task 1 general idea (5 minutes)
I. Ask the students to glance at the title and the pictures of the passage, and then guess what they will read in the text. Then let the students read the passage as quickly as they can and answer the following four questions: 1. Who is the student?
2. What animals were observed?
3. When did Jane Goodall arrive in Gombe?
She arrived in Gombe in 1960. (para2. line3)
4. What was the purpose of her study of the chimps?
Her purpose was to help the rest of the world (to) understand and respect the life of the chimps. (para3, line 1)
II. After this, I can lead the students easily conclude the main idea of the text from the four questions:
Purpose of design: to inspire students to read actively, not passively. Task 2 main idea of each paragraph (6 minutes)
In this task, I will divide the whole class into 4 groups to skim the whole text and find out the topic sentence of each paragraph, and then use their own words to express those sentences:
Para 1. Following Jane’s way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the
forest. (line 2, 3) →How the group followed Jane’s way of studying chimps in the
wild.
Para 2. Nobody before Jane fully understood chimp behavior. (line 1)→What Jane
discovered about chimps.
Para 3. For forty years Jane Goodall has been outspoken about making the rest of the world
understand and respect the life of these animals. (line 1) →How Jane tries to protect
the lives of chimps in their natural habitat.
Para 4. She has achieved everything she wanted to do. (line 1)→Jane Goodall’s
achievements.

Purpose of design: to help students pay attention to the topic sentence of each paragraph, which
