Part 3: Reading Comprehension
Directions:There are two passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are four choices marked A, B, C, and
D. You should decide on the best choice.
Passage One
Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.
Girls think they are cleverer, more successful and harder working than boys from as young as four, a study has found. Boys come round to this view by the age of seven or eight and assume that girls will outperform them at school and behave better in lessons, research from the University of Kent shows. The study — Gender Expectations and Stereotype Threat — argues that teachers have lower expectations of boys than of girls and this belief fulfills itself throughout primary and secondary school.
Girls’ performance at school may be boosted by what they perceive to be their teachers’ belief that they will achieve higher results and be more conscientious (认真的,勤奋的) than boys, the academics claim. Boys may underachieve because they pick up in teachers’ assumptions that they will obtain lower results than girls and have less drive.
“By seven or eight years old children of both genders believe that boys are less focused, able and successful than girls —and think that adults endorse (认可) this stereotype,”the academic Bonny Hartley said. “There are signs that these expectations have the potential to become self-fulfilling in influencing children’s actual conduct and achievement.” Hartley said that while it was unacceptable to divide classes by the race of their pupils, this was not the case for gender. “In this way, it is widely acceptable to pitch the boys against the girls or ‘harmlessly’ divide the class in this way for practical ease.”
Jenny Parkes, senior lecturer at the Institute of Education, University of London, said there had been marked changes in girls’ achievement in the UK in the latter half of the 20th century, in part thanks to feminism’s influence on the way girls view themselves.
“This seems to be particularly the case for middle-class girls. Some studies have looked at how academic work is seen as ‘feminine’ and so for some boys achieving highly at school risks being labeled as feminine,” Parkes said.
“At the same time, this differs across different countries, ethnic and social class groups and from subject to subject. Adults do have an important role in helping children — whether they are girls or boys, high or low achievers —to have confidence in themselves as learners. ”
16. By referring to the first paragraph, the study shows that ______.

Passage Two
Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.
When next year’s crop of high school graduates arrive at Oxford University in the fall of 2009, they’ll be joined by a new face: Andrew Hamilton, the 55-year-old provost (教务长) of Yale, who’ll become Oxford’s vice-chancellor — a position equivalent to university president in America.
Hamilton isn’t the only educator crossing the Atlantic. Schools in France, Egypt, Singapore, etc. have also recently made top-level hires from abroad. Higher education has become a big and competitive business nowadays, and like so many businesses, it’s gone global. Yet the talent flow isn’t universal. High-level personnel tend to head in only one direction: outward from America.
The chief reason is that American schools don’t te nd to seriously consider looking abroad. For example, when the board of the University of Colorado searched for new president, it wanted a leader familiar with the state government, a major source of the university’s budget. “We didn’t do any global consid eration,” says Patricia Hayes, the board’s chair. The board ultimately picked Bruce Benson, a 69-year-old businessman and political activist (活动家) who is likely to do well in the main task of modern university presidents: fund-raising. Fund-raising is a distinctively American thing, since U.S. schools rely heavily on donations. The fund-raising ability is largely a product of experience and necessity.
Many European universities, meanwhile, are still mostly dependent on government funding. But government support has failed to keep pace with rising student numbers. The decline in government support has made fund-raising an increasingly necessary ability among administrators, and has hiring committees hungry for Americans.
In the past few years, prominent schools around the world have joined the trend. In the 2003, when Cambridge University appointed Alison Richard, another former Yale provost, at its vice-chancellor, the university publicly stressed that in her previous job she had overseen (监督) “ a major strengthening of Yale’s financial position. ”
Of course, fund-raising isn’t the only skill outsiders offer. The globalization of education means more universities will be seeking heads with international experience of some kind to
新目标综合教程1随行课堂 词汇与阅读4-1 Unit 1-6
promote international programs and attract a global student body. Foreigners can offer a fresh perspective on established practice.

D. You should decide on the best choice.
Passage One
Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.
Rosa Parks was born February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. She spent her childhood in Alabama. When she was 11, she enrolled in the Montgomery Industrial School for Girls. Later, she worked as a seamstress in Montgomery. Rosa Parks has been called the “mother of the civil rights movement” and one of the most important citizens of the 20th century. In the early 1950s, the bus system in Montgomery, as in many parts of the United States, was segregated. Blacks were required to board the bus at the front, buy their tickets, and then re-board the bus in the back. Sometimes, they weren’t able to get on the bus again before it drove away. They w ere not allowed to sit in the front of the bus, which sometimes made it difficult to get off at the right stop. Even if they were sitting in the “black section”, they were still required to give their seats up to white passengers if the “white section” was full. In December of 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger. The bus driver had her arrested. She was tried and convicted of violating a local ordinance. Her act sparked a citywide boycott of the bus system. This refusal to ride the bus introduced the country to a clergyman named Martin Luther King, Jr. who gained national prominence, leading the protest with the words: “There comes a time that people get tired”. Eventually, the U.S. Supreme Court made a decision ou tlawing segregation on city buses. In December 1956, Montgomery’s public transportation system was legally integrated. Over the next four decades, Rosa Parks helped make her fellow Americans aware of the history of the civil rights struggle. This pioneer in the struggle for racial equality earned many honors, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Nonviolent Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Congressional Gold Medal. She is an example of courage and determination and an inspirational symbol to all Americans. She recently died in Detroit, Michigan on October 24, 2005 at age 92.

Passage Two
Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.
After watching my mother deal with our family of five, I can’t understand why her answer to the question, “What do you do?” is always, “Oh, I’m just a housewife.” JUST a housewife? Anyone who spends most of her time in meal preparation and cleanup, washing and drying clothes, keeping the house clean, leading a scout troop, playing taxi driver to us kids when it’s time for school, music lessons or the dentist, doing volunteer work for her favorite charity, and making sure that all our family needs are met is not JUST a housewife. She’s the real Wonder Woman.
Why is it that so many mothers like mine think of themselves as second-class or something similar? Where has this notion come from? Have we males made them feel this way? Has our society made “going to work” outside the home seem more important than what a housewife must face each day? I would be very curious to see what would happen if a housewife went on strike. Dishes would pile up. Food in the house would run out. No meals would appear on the table. There would be no clean clothes when needed. High boots would be required just to make it through the house scattered with garbage. Walking and bus riding would increase. Those scout troops would have to break up. Charities would suffer. I doubt if the man of the house would be able to take over. Oh, he might start out with the attitude that he can do just as good a job, but how long would that last? Not long, once he had to come home each night after work to more household duties. There would be no more coming home to a prepared meal; he’d have to fix it himself. The kids would all be screaming for something to eat, clean clothes and more bus fare money. Once he quieted the kids, he’d have to clean the house, go shopping, make sure that kids got a bath, and fix lunches for the next day. Once the kids were down for the night, he might be
新目标综合教程1随行课堂 词汇与阅读4-1 Unit 1-6
able to crawl into an unmade bed and try to read the morning newspaper. No, I don’t think many males are going to volunteer for the job. I know I don’t want it.
So, thanks, mom! I’ll do what I can to create a national holiday for housewives. It could be appropriately called Wonder Woman Day.

D. You should decide on the best choice.
Passage One
Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.
Material culture refers to what can be seen, held, felt, used what a culture produces. Examining a culture’s tools and technology can tell us about the group’s history and way of life. Similarly, research into the material culture of music can help us to understand the music-culture. The most vivid body of material culture in it, of course, are musical instruments. We cannot hear for ourselves the actual sound of any musical performance before the 1870s when the phonograph (留声机) was invented, so we rely on instruments for important information about music-cultures in the remote past and their development. Here we have two kinds of evidence: instruments well preserved and instruments pictured in art. Through the study of instruments, as well as paintings, written documents, and so on, we can explore the movement of music from the Near East to China over a thousand years ago, or we can outline the spread of Near Eastern influence to Europe that resulted in the development of most of the instruments in the symphony orchestra (交响乐).
Sheet music (乐谱) or printed music, too, is material culture. Scholars once defined folk music cultures as those in which people learn and sing music by ear rather than from print, but research shows mutual influence among oral and written sources during the past few centuries in Europe, Britain, and America. Printed versions limit variety because they tend to standardize any song, yet they stimulate people to create new and different songs. Besides, the ability to read music notation (乐谱) has a far-reaching effect on musicians and it becomes widespread on the music culture as a whole.
One more important part of music’s material culture should be singled out: the influence of the electronic media — radio, record player, tape recorder, television, and videocassette, with the future promising talking and singing computers and other developments. This is all part of the
新目标综合教程1随行课堂 词汇与阅读4-1 Unit 1-6

Passage Two
Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.
A painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and arduous as a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and pro with

the right arm — two entirely different movements.
Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists are spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is the piano tuner’s responsibility to tune th e instrument for them. But they have their own difficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlapping tone has to sound clear. This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have to learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sounds with fanatical but selfless authority.
Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowledge and understanding.
Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they can enjoy performing works written in any century.
