Downloaded At: 03:42 10 September 2010Withtheavailabilityofmultisensor,multitemporal,multiresolutionandmultifrequencyimagedatafromoperationalEarthobservationsatellitesthefusionofdigitalimagedatahasbecomeavaluabletoolinremotesensingimageevaluation.Digitalimagefusionisarelativelynewresearcheldattheleadingedgeofavailabletechnology.Itformsarapidlydevelopingareaofresearchinremotesensing.ThisreviewpaperdescribesandexplainsmainlypixelbasedimagefusionofEarthobservationsatellitedataasacontributiontomultisensorintegrationorienteddataprocessing.Abstract.1.IntroductionEarthobservationsatellitesprovidedatacoveringdi erentportionsoftheelectro-magneticspectrumatdi erentspatial,temporalandspectralresolutions.Forthe
fullexploitationofincreasinglysophisticatedmultisourcedata,advancedanalyticalornumericaldatafusiontechniquesarebeingdeveloped(Shen1990).Fusedimagesmayprovideincreasedinterpretationcapabilitiesandmorereliableresultssincedatawithdi erentcharacteristicsarecombined.Theimagesvaryinspectral,spatialandtemporalresolutionandthereforegiveamorecompleteviewoftheobservedobjects.
Itistheaimofimagefusiontointegratedi erentdatainordertoobtainmoreinformationthancanbederivedfromeachofthesinglesensordataalone(`1+1=3’).Agoodexampleisthefusionofimagesacquiredbysensorssensitivetovisible/infrared(VIR)withdatafromactivesyntheticapertureradar(SAR).TheinformationcontainedinVIRimagerydependsonthemultispectralre¯ectivityofthetargetilluminatedbysunlight.SARimageintensitiesdependonthecharac-teristicsoftheilluminatedsurfacetargetaswellasonthesignalitself.Thefusionofthesedisparatedatacontributetotheunderstandingoftheobjectsobserved.
Imagefusionhasmanyaspectstobelookedat.Beforebeingabletoimplementanduseanimagefusionapproachsomeofitsquestionsthatneedtobeansweredbytheuserinclude:

onempiricalresults(furtherconsiderationsonthistopicarereviewedin§4and§6.2).
