Thisstandardisissuedunderthe xeddesignationA510;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.ThisstandardhasbeenapprovedforusebyagenciesoftheDepartmentofDefense.

1.Scope*

1.1Thisspeci cationcoversgeneralrequirementsforcar-bonsteelwirerodsanduncoatedcoarseroundwireincoilsorstraightenedandcutlengths.

1.2Incaseofcon ict,therequirementsinthepurchaseorder,onthedrawing,intheindividualspeci cation,andinthisgeneralspeci cationshallprevailinthesequencenamed.

3.1De nitionsofTermsSpeci ctoThisStandard:

3.1.1carbonsteel—steelinwhichnominimumcontentisspeci edorrequiredforaluminum,chromium,cobalt,colum-bium,molybdenum,nickel,titanium,tungsten,vanadium,orzirconium,oranyotherelementaddedtoobtainadesiredalloyingeffect;whenthespeci edminimumforcopperdoesnotexceed0.40%;orwhenthemaximumcontentspeci edforanyofthefollowingelementsdoesnotexceedthesepercent-ages:manganese1.65,silicon0.60,orcopper0.60.

3.1.2Discussion—Inallcarbonsteelssmallquantitiesofcertainresidualelementsunavoidablyretainedfromrawma-terialsaresometimesfoundthatarenotspeci edorrequired,suchascopper,nickel,molybdenum,chromium,etc.Theseelementsareconsideredasincidentalandarenotformallydeterminedorreported.

3.1.4coarseroundwire—from0.035to0.999in.indiam-eter,inclusive,wirethatisproducedfromhot-rolledwirerodsorhot-rolledcoiledbarsbyoneormorecoldreductionsprimarilyforthepurposeofobtainingadesiredsizewithdimensionalaccuracy,surface nish,andmechanicalproper-ties.Byvaryingtheamountofcoldreductionandotherwiremillpractices,includingthermaltreatment,awidediversityofmechanicalpropertiesand nishesaremadeavailable.

3.1.5Discussion—CoarseroundwireisdesignatedbySteelWireGagenumbers,commonfractions,ordecimalpartsofaninch.TheSteelWireGagesystemisshowninTable1.Sincethemanygagesystemsinusemaycauseconfusion,thepurchaserisencouragedtospecifywirediametersininchesordecimalparts,orboth.
