Chronologically the Victorian period roughly coincides with the reign of Queen Victoria who ruled over England from 1836 to 1901. It was a long period of peace, prosperity, refined sensibilities and national self-confidence for Britain.

4 General Characteristics of Victorian Literature

1. Come closer to daily life which reflects its practical problems and interests 2. Moral Purpose: The Victorian literature seems to deviate from "art for art's sake" and asserts its moral purpose. 3. Idealism: It is often considered as an age of doubt and pessimism. The influence of science is felt here. 4. Though, the age is characterized as practical and materialistic, most of the writers exalt a purely ideal life.

Victorian novelsNovel was the most widely read & the most vital & challenging form of literature Novelists in this period carried their duty forward to the criticism of the society & the defense of the mass. Novelist were all concerned about the fate of the common people.

The greatest cristical reallistic writer Dickens loved the style of the 18th century picturesque or Gothic romance novels His writing style is florid(华丽的) and poetic, with a strong comic touch. His literary style is also a mixture of fantasy and realism.
