Special hints for an attractive finish"Happiness," with its themes of love, peace, blue sky, hopes and dreams, is representative of Tom Akamine's fanciful illustrations. Fascinated by European life from childhood, Akamine recreates a room with white walls and a welcoming fireplace. It's Christmas Eve, and snow is falling. A red sock awaits gifts from Santa, and a white table is decorated with vivid red and orange flowers. In the shadow of the curtain, a small green piano awaits a nimble-fingered player. Profile: Tom Akamine Born in Yokohama, Japan, in 1933. A voice actor in the NHK Broadcasting Drama Troupe and a prolific graphic designer, Akamine was subsequently employed as a graphic designer in an ad agency. Entering the Nika Exhibition as a sideline, his work was recognized with a prize, after which he decided to pursue a career as a free-lance illustrator. In search of material for his illustrations he has traveled extensively in Europe over the years, visiting 15 countries to date. Use the included sketch as a reference and compare your work to it as you go. Marking numbers on the back of each part as you cut them out will help to keep track of them. Take your time to cut out each piece carefully. Be sure to cut slots in advance too. Make creases on the fold lines of the parts you have cut out, before gluing them. (Use a used ball-point pen to crease the fold lines.) For parts that require curling, be sure to use a metal rod to curl them in advance.
