The Australian Mining Guide is designed to provide a background to the history, financial performance, regulatory environment and economic significance of the mining and resource industry to potential investors or stakeholders in the Australian mining industry.Mining has been a very significant force in the

development of Australia and a major contributor to wealth generation and export income. Bulk commodity production and export has become part of Australia’s identity to such an extent that the Australian dollar is often referred to as a “commodity currency”.

The recent boom and significant collapse in commodity prices has highlighted the dependence Australia has on commodities. Our industry is driven by capital intensive development of world class projects. Equity, debt and project funding underpin the development costs and many projects are of such significance that agreements by end users to take the output are required before construction commences.

The industry has faced many challenges over its 200+ year history and the current credit crisis has been the catalyst for the current challenges in the market. Significant new investment is required to recapitalise companies and build new projects that will provide the base materials for the continued development of China, India and other developing nations.
