Introduction
In order to reveal Shakespeare's reasonable arrangement of Hamlet's destiny, a study of Hamlet's psychology seems necessary. In the past 400 years' Shakespearian studies, critics have interpreted Hamlet's psychology from different angles like Hamlet's character, background and the Oedipus complex. The process of the revenge vividly present the characteristics of the hero in the text of Hamlet. What is in Hamlet's mind and what is the reason of Hamlet's procrastination during his revenge? The paper, based on the Freudian theory of the structure of the mind, gives an incisive analysis in the process of his revenge.
Part I
Freudian Theory
The tripartite personality structure, proposed by Sigmund Freud, describes that personality is a dynamic energy system which is composed by three subsystems called id, ego and super-ego, following the principles of happiness, reality and morality correspondingly. And the interactions among the above three are the composition of the unified whole.
Just because of the serious conflict which is difficult to coordinate among the three subsystems, he can do nothing but hesitation and procrastination.
Part II
Hamlet's Id
Hamlet's father was killed by his uncle Claudius, and his mother was forcibly occupied, with the throne being usurped. The hatred is so deep that he can't help thinking over and planning the revenge. Therefore, his id followed the principle of happiness, in spite of good and evil, and force him to revenge, looking for the satisfaction of instinct desire without any restraint, abandoning all the morality and value. The real purpose of his id is killing his uncle, get the crown back and prove the innocence of his mother regardless of the external conflict and crisis.
That is the "id" of Hamlet.
Part III
Hamlet's super-ego
On the moral level, for one thing, Hamlet would rather denied the idea of killing the king of the Denmark, he deeply knew the importance of the hierarchical order in the national regime. So it is a violation for his political belief to kill Claudius.
Although Claudius just take the throne, he is the king whether people support him or not. Just as Liu Bingshan says: If the king hastily killed by Hamlet, which may arouse panic and endanger the security of the kindom. Therefore, what he thought is no longer the revenge of himself, but the national destiny.
For another thing, Hamlet is facing the disorder of the ethic blood relationship. The target of his revenge is his uncle, and his stepfather, so if he still insist the revenge, he will be in the dilemma of ethic criticism and rebuke.
