Unit 5 Section B A $3,000 dictionary
1 I remember a day some years back on one of the first days of a new semester in college. People were tossing balls, passing out catalogs, and handing out free stuff. I was completely charmed by all the activity. After all, a major feature of college life is limited finances. Free stuff is like gold and I felt entitled to my share!
1 After all, a major feature of college life is limited finances. Free stuff is like gold and I felt entitled to my share! (Para. 1)
Meaning: In brief, limited financial sources for students are a typical characteristic of college life, so free gifts are as precious as gold which I thought I deserved to get.
Note: We can also say “entitle sb. to do sth.” For example:
This card can entitle you to have a free meal in this hotel.
2 I moved closer to scout out the situation. In my mind, I heard my mother issue her famous line: "There is no such thing as free stuff!", as the student behind the table urged me to receive a brand-new dictionary. My mom's voice was quickly filtered out as I reached out to claim my gift. I was handed a form instead. Once I completed the credit card application, I was told, I would receive a free dictionary. With the confidence that a probe of my finances would reveal the sheer weakness of my profile,I completed the form and submitted it.
2 I moved closer to scout out the situation. In my mind, I heard my mother issue her famous line: “There is no such thing as free stuff!”, as the student behind the table urged me to receive a brand-new dictionary. (Para. 2)
Meaning beyond words: At first, the author remembered what his mom had said and didn’t believe that there was something free in this world. However, he just couldn’t resist the temptation of a free dictionary in the end.

3 My mom’s voice was quickly filtered out as I reached out to claim my gift. I was handed a form instead. Once I completed the credit card application, I was told, I would receive a free dictionary. (Para. 2)
Meaning: As I reached out to get my gift, my mom’s words faded away quickly. However, what I got was only a form. I was promised that as soon as I filled out the credit card application form, I would be given a free dictionary.
4 With the confidence that a probe of my finances would reveal the sheer weakness of my profile, I completed the form and submitted it. (Para. 2)
Meaning beyond words: As he was pretty sure that an investigation of his inadequate financial situation would stop them from issuing him a credit card, he filled out the form and handed it in. (He never expected to get a credit card!)
3 To my sheer amazement, plastic freedom made its way into my mailbox a few weeks later. At first, I was shocked that these huge credit card corporations trusted me, a struggling student holding two minimum wage part-time jobs and paying monthly installments on a purchased computer. But the credit card company seemed to know more than I did, so I accepted the card and decided it was perfect to develop my own credit like so many had done before me.
5 To my sheer amazement, plastic freedom made its way into my mailbox a few weeks later. At first, I was shocked that these huge credit card corporations trusted me, a struggling student holding two minimum wage part-time jobs and paying monthly installments on a purchased computer. (Para.3)
Meaning beyond words: To his great astonishment, a credit card was sent to him a few weeks later. At first, he was so surprised that these huge credit card companies even trusted a student without any financial power and stability.
6 But the credit card company seemed to know more than I did, so I accepted the card and decided it was perfect to develop my own credit like so many had done before me. (Para. 3)
Meaning beyond words: Despite his financial situation, the credit card company issued him a credit card anyway. The nice surprise gave him a false impression that his credit
