Passage Four
Queen Elizabeth and her family are international superstars. In fact, they’re the most famous family in the world. For example, when the magazines have a British royal person on the cover, they sell between 18%-20% more copies; it’s possible to buy more than eighty books on the Princess of Wales alone. But the question is why they are so popular? Lots of other countries have royal families too. What’s so special about Britain’s? The following are some important factors.
First, the ―British history‖ factor. Many of Britain’s top tourist attractions are royal, ―The Changing of the Guard‖, for example. For millions of people, these traditions connect Britain’s past with the
modern world. In other words, the Queen and her family are symbols of British history. Second, the ―film star‖ factor. Princess Diana is the best example of this. Like a film star or a pop singer – She’s rich; She wears clothes specially made by designers; She’s beautiful; She has famous friends; She lives in big houses; She travels all over the world. The mass communications and the public love film stars. They love beautiful and exciting princesses with the ―film star‖ factor too. Third, the ―world leader” factor. Queen Elizabeth is the Queen of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but that’s not all. She’s also the head of the Commonwealth----a group of forty-eight countries with a total population of 900 million. This makes her not only a British leader, but also an international leader.
