On October 2, 2004 during the National Day, I witnessed a good deed in Zhongshan Park just on my visit to the Forbidden City.

It was around five o’clock in the afternoon and it was raining heavily. Hardly had I got to the entrance to the Park when I heard a foreign woman screaming “Oh! My God!” with that, I stopped and turned to her. “What happened to you? What can I do for you?” a policeman on duty asked her earnestly. “My wallet is lost. There is all my money, visa and something important to me,” the woman answered with eagerness. “Please take it easy. I will put your case in file, and once it is found out, I will report you. Here is some money. You are welcome to receive and use it first.” The foreigner was only too moved to say “That’s great! Thank you very much” to the policeman.

In my eyes, the major responsibility for this case was not related to the policeman. On the contrary, he should be praised for his good deed. It was because of his hearty and unselfish help that Beijing and China must have deeply impressed many foreign visitors. Of course, the thief should be blamed for his or her misconduct. If the case had not taken place, the consequence that her valuables were stolen would not have been so serious to the foreign woman. As we know, the loss of visa means everything to a foreigner.
