inseparable, but she later rejects the dangerous Heathcliff to
marry respectable Edger Linton. When Linton puts an end to
their friendship, Catherine becomes ill and then dies in
childbirth. Heathcliff seeks revenge by wooing Edgar’s sister,
Isabella, and cheating the Earnshaws out of their family home,
Wuthering Heights; he also takes the Linton home, Thrushcross
Grange. The story ends when the ghost of Catherine comes for
Heathcliff and he dies, leaving the two houses to their rightful
owners. Emily Jane Brontë (30 July 1818 – 19 December 1848) was an English novelist and poet, best remembered for her solitary novel, Wuthering Heights, now considered a classic of English literature. Emily was the third eldest of the four surviving Brontë siblings, between the youngest Anne and her brother Branwell. She wrote under
the pen name Ellis Bell.
This was a story about love and revenge. Although the relationship of the characters was a little complicated, but the plot of story was really attractive. I would like to talk about one of the main characters of the story—Catherine Earnshaw. At the beginning, the author showed us a kind of innocent true love between Catherine and Heathcliff by Nelly’s description. They always played on the field, like a pair of savages. But everything changed after Cathy turned back from Thrushcross Grange. Cathy’s vain nature exposed—she married Linton rather than Heathcliff who she had loved for such a long time—this was the reason why Heathcliff carried out a brutal revenge, I guess.
In my opinion, this novel not only intends to tell us a story about love and revenge, but also tries to show us that the author was eager for freedom under such an oppressive society. The story reflected the darkness side of the society, full of vanity and cheats, by describing the life of Cathy. In addition, this maybe was a novel which implied the dissatisfied of the author to the society of the
time.
