Cultural difference on pragmatic levelLanguage can be used to perform many tasks: to address people, to compliment people, to make a request, to extend an invitation, to declare a man and a woman husband and wife, and even to sentence a criminal to death. Our everyday communication is universally filled with such pragmatic use of language, but the realization of speech act is different from culture to culture. So here we will discuss two aspects about it.

Addressing people① The order of Surnames and given names is different. Example:

Liu

Xiaoping

Chuck

Bass

Surname Last name

given name first name

Given name First name

surname last name

②Many English-speaking people tend to address others by using the first name. f.e. lily coco Shelley Chinese think it disrespectful to address people by name. ③Chinese prefer to address others by using their tittles, or occupation while this custom is not totally applicable in English because only a few occupations or tittles are used before a person’s last name. f.e. 王老师(Teacher Wang)李经理(Manager Li) Dr. Martin Mayor Smith

④When you want to get the attention of a stranger, the Chinese are likely to do so by using a general term of address such as 同志(comrade)、 师傅 (master)、 叔叔(uncle). In contrast, such expressions as Excuse me, Pardon me, are used to attract people’s attention in English.
