“NO!” I yelled, seeing our cats dashed out of the closet. My eyes widened in horror as I saw the gift-wrapped dress on the floor, torn and tattered. Oscar's face paled as we both stared at the ruined surprise. Tears welled up in my eyes. How could this have happened? But there was no time to wallow in disappointment. We had to think fast.

“Where did you get such a beautiful scarf?” Mom asked. I looked at Oscar, panic-stricken. Then, on the spur of the moment, I grabbed the torn pieces of fabric and held them up. “Mom, this was supposed to be a dress for you. We made it with all our love. But the cats got to it.” Mom's eyes filled with emotion. She took the pieces from me and hugged us both. “This is the most beautiful ‘scarf’ I've ever seen. It's filled with your love and that's all that matters.”
