Text B Our Changing Lifestyle: Trends and Fads

I. Summary of the Text

There had been popular clothing and entertainments all through the passing years, I wondered if you had ever paid attention to the popular characters, or popular life style. To sum it up, all those “fashionable” could be classified into fads and trends. Fads were momentous; they came and went without leaving a trace. While trends were essential change of real life, it would be the dominating characteristic of the days to come. In most of the occasions, it was difficult to tell fads from trends, but it would be interesting to observe them.

Part I (para.1-3) ：gives an overview of ongoing changes in our lifestyle

Para.1 Lifestyles: Trends and fads are changing very fast.

Paras.2-3 Influence: On all aspects of modern life, even people themselves

Part II (para.4-6) ：explains short-term unimportant fads and long-lasting influential social trends

Para. 4 Cause: People feel good when they are part of an “in-group”.

Para. 5 Difference: Between trends and fads.

Para.6 An exciting trend: Euro kids.

III. Key Words and Phrases

1. Trend: n. a general direction or development 趋势，趋向，倾向

The trend of wages is still upward. 工资仍然有提高的趋势。

Fashion design trends toward simplicity. 服装设计趋于简洁。

[C]trend 指倾向，即总的发展方向或路线；

tendency指以某种特定方式发展的自然倾向，后接不定式作后置修饰语。

Wood has a tendency to swell when it gets wet. 木头受潮时，趋于膨胀。

fad 指一时的风尚，短时间内流行。

Style: n. . fashion, esp. in clothes 时髦； 时尚

Does Paris set the style lf dress for the world? 巴黎是不是开世界服装的新风？

General appearance, formal design, kind or sort 式样，类型

They sell hats in all sizes and styles。 他们出售各种尺寸和式样的帽子。

This evening dress came into style shortly after the war.这种款式的晚礼服战后才流行。

in style 在式样方面，时髦地（的）， out of style 不时髦（或时兴）的

handle… with style. 地当地处理某事； This style is man.（谚语）文如其人。

2. Escape: vt . avoid 避免，逃避；vi. ( ~ from, out of) get free, get away 逃跑，逃脱

There is no way to escape punishment(being punished).没有法子能避免惩罚。

She longed to escape from her mother’s domination. 她渴望摆脱母亲的操纵。

3. Specific: a 特定的， 特有的；具体的，明确的

Each of the bodily organs has its own specific function. 身体的每个器官都有特定功能。

She has no specific aim.她没有明确的目标。

4. Commercial: n. an advertisement on television or radio（电视或无线电）商业广告

The TV show was interrupted by too many commercial. 电视节目被许多广告打断。

5. Customer 顾客，主顾

The country is seeking customers for its textiles. 该国正在为其纺织品寻找买主。

It’s an axiom in the business world that a satisfied customer is the best advertisement.

shopper 指准备在商店或正在商店里购物的购物者；passenger 指搭乘交通工具的乘客

6. Profit: 利润 The company has declared an increase in profit. 该公司宣布利润增加。

They make a profit of ten pence on every copy they sell. 他们每售出一本获利十便士。

gain profit from 从…得到益处 do something for profit 为营利而作某事

do sth. to one’s profit 作某事而得益 sell sth at a profit 出售某物而获利

make a profit from 从…中营利 There is no profit in doing sth. 作某事徒劳无益；

net/gross profits 纯利润/总利润，净利

7. Rational:理性的；理智的； 合理的；出于理性Man is a rational being.人是有理性的生物。

Panic destroys rational thoughts。 惊恐使人不能作理性的思考。

[C]rational, reasonable, sensible 均可指“合理的”。

rational 侧重指有思考、判断、推理的能力，或指事物合乎道理，强调理性；

reasonable 指人说话办事讲道理，公平合理；

sensible 指善用常识、明白事理，办事周到或指事务符合实际，切实可行。

This restaurant charges reasonable prices. 这家餐馆要价合理。

She is too sensible to accept a ride from strangers. 她很明智，不会搭任何陌生人的车。

8.Frequent: a. happening often 时常发生的，频繁的 vt. 常到；常去；

The car manufacturer make frequent changes of models.汽车制造商经常变换产品型号。

His visits became less frequent as time passed. 他渐渐地不常登门拜访了。

Frequent the theatre.常去看戏。

9. Personal: private 个人的；私人的

She made a personal donation to the fund.确她以个人名义向基金会捐款。

His personal life is a mystery to his colleagues. 他的同事认为他的私生活是个迷。

10. Similar: alike；resembling sth./sb. but not the same , be similar to 相似的， 类似的
