Brief Introduction

Memorable words have been uttered in inaugural address. It is a speech, lecture officially made by a person on taking office(就 职). From George Washington to Barack Hussein Obama , Presidents have used inaugural addresses to articulate their hopes and dreams for a nation. Collectively, these addresses record the course of this country from its earliest days to the present.

From 1793 until 1933 the induction of the new president was scheduled for noon on March 4, every fourth year. Under the 20th Amendment to the U.S constitution it has taken place on January 20 since 1937.

( Zachary Taylor 扎卡里〃泰勒 was sworn in on March 5, 1849, to avoid taking the oath on Sunday.)

On April 30,1789, George Washington stepped onto a balcony of Federal Hall in New York City, placed his hand on a Bible and swore to "preserve, protest and defend the constitution of the United States".

历史上,最匪夷所思的就是威 廉〃亨利〃哈里森1841年冒着严寒发表的演说。那次演说 要了他的命。哈里森发表了历时1小时40分钟的讲话,既没 戴帽子,也没穿大衣。不过,68岁的哈里森此后仍然履行 了数周的总统职责。目前尚不知道哈里森是何时患上了感 冒,乃至后来转成了肺炎,但他直到就职23天之后才请医 生诊治。他在大约一周后去世。

醉酒副总统搞砸就职典礼

对于有些不幸的总统而言,特别要提防一下竞选时的亲密 搭档,因为有时副总统也可以把事情办砸。1865年,亚伯 拉罕〃林肯的副总统安德鲁〃约翰逊喝得醉醺醺的,结果 他在接下来的演讲中语无伦次,甚至一度胡说八道起来, 将就职典礼搞得一塌糊涂,以至于一位议员称之为“美国 历史上最不幸的事件”。

1873年,在尤利西斯〃格兰特宣誓就职开始第二个任期的 那一天,组织者为就职舞会临时搭建的木头房子冷得像冰 箱。来宾穿着大衣跳舞,食物冻成了冰坨。由于气温太低, 乐师的小提琴的琴弦都断了。现场有100只以悦耳的鸣叫声 活跃气氛的金丝雀,结果却冻死在笼子里。

1961 年,美国最伟大的诗人罗伯特〃弗罗斯特应邀在约 翰〃肯尼迪的就职典礼上吟诵自己的诗句。这段经历让他 痛苦不堪。由于阳光刺眼,86岁高龄的诗人睁不开眼睛, 无法朗诵他的新作。慌乱之下,弗罗斯特只好背诵自己的 旧作品,并把这首诗献给“当选总统约翰〃芬利先生”, 而芬利其实是哈佛大学的一位学者。
