electronicage,however,boughtendlessalternativestoreadingnovels,plays,andshortfictions,andin2deedtomostformsofthewrittenworld”.Ontheonehand,thisprovidespeoplefromallclassesachancetolearnliteraturefromwatchingfilmsorTVplays,thusspreadsthejoyofappreciatingclassicswhichbelongedtotheuppercircletoalmostevery2body.Ithelpstoraisetheintellectualtoneofsociety,cultivatethepublicmindandrefinepeople’sperson2nallife.Butontheotherhand,asArthurTracesaid,the“audio2visualrevolutionisonemoremajorthreattothepreservationofourliteraryheritage.”Itis“oneofthemostpersistentthreatstoathrivinglit2erarytradition”.Watchingfilmsisnotatwo2wayin2teractivesystemandasksneitherinitiativenorcre2ativity.Itconfinespeople’simaginationwhichcanbeadoptedinreading.Itmakespeopledull2wittedthroughitsunidirectionalinculcationandvulgarizestheclassicsofliterature.CharlotteBronte’swords,thoughstatedearlyin1848,maymakethingsclear.HearingthatJaneEyrehadbeenputonthestage,shesaidtoSmithWilliams(aliteraryadvisortoSmith,Elder&Co.—Charlotte’spublisher):theplayisveryunfavorableforitsauthor’spart.Allthingsinthestorycouldbeunluckilyandsorrowfullyexaggeratedanddebasedbytheactors.Icannothelpaskingmyself,howcanMr.Rochesterbeactedout?WhatIhaveinmymindisahumiliatingpicture.AsforJaneEyre,Icanonlyimagineanoddly2behavedandstagyheroine(translatedbythewriterofthisar2ticle).
