Jerry was always in a good mood and had something positive to say. When someone asked him how he was doing, he would reply, “If I were any better, I would be twins!”
He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The waiters followed Jerry because he was a natural motivator. If an employee had a had day, Jerry would tell the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Jerry replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself I wake up and say to myself Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens , I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out① the positive side of life.

Life is all about choices. Every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. How you live your life is your life is your own choice. I reflected on what Jerry said.

Soon I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch②, but often thought abo
ut him when I made a choice in my life. Several years later, I heard that Jerry was shot and badly wounded in a robbery when robbers came in through the back door that Jerry had left open. Luckily, Jerry was found quickly and rushed to the local hospital. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital. I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, “If I were any better, I d be twins. Want to see my scars?”

I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. “The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door.” Jerry replied. “Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live.”
“Weren’t you scared?” I asked. Jerry continued, “The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they took me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions of the doctors, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, he’s a dead man.“难道你那是不害怕吗?” ”

“I knew I needed to take action.” “What did you do?” I asked. “Well, a nurse asked if I was allergic to anything,” said Jerry, “I replied yes.” The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I yelled, Bullets! ”
Over their laughter, I told them. I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead. ” Jerry lived, thanks to the skill of his d
octors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything.

Ask most people anywhere in the world what they want out of life, and the reply will probably be: “to be happy.” Yet happiness is hard to get. You cannot buy it in shops. It does not grow naturally in the countryside. There is no such thing as a degree course in happiness.

But there is such a thing 不过,确实有 as a professor of happiness. His name is Ed Deiner, and he 教授,此人名叫 is a psychology professor at 埃德· 戴纳,是美 the University of Illinois in the 国的伊利诺斯大 U.S. Ed Deiner has spent his 学的心里学教授。 whole他毕生都在研究 professional life studying what makes people 使人们感到快乐 happy, comparing levels of 的因素,比较不 happiness between cultures 同的文化之间快 and trying to find out exactly 乐程度的差异, why we enjoy enjoying 想找出人们喜欢 ourselves.

Many people would say that this question does mot need an answer. But Professor Deiner has one anyway. “If you re a cheerful, happy person, your marriage is more likely to last, and you re more likely to make money and be successful at your job. On average, happy people have stronger immune systems, and there is some evidence that they live longer.”

Happ
iness is hard to define, says Professor Deiner. It means different things in different cultures. Some language do not even have a word for it. That is a sad thought. So who are the world s happiest people? It depends on how the word is defined. There is individual happiness, the sense of joy we get when we do something we like. But there is also the feeling of satisfaction we get when we know that others respect us and approve of how we behave. According to Professor Deiner, the Western world pursues individual happiness while Asia prefers mutual satisfaction.
“In the West, the individualistic (个人主义的) culture means that your mood matters much more than it does in the East. People ask themselves, what can I do that s fun or interesting? They become unhappy when they can t do any of these things. If you ask people from Japan or China if they are happy, they tend to look at what has gone wrong in their lives. If not much has gone wrong, then they are satisfied.”

People from Spain and other Spanish-speaking 戴纳教授发现, countries had the 西班牙以及说西班牙 happiest culture, 语的国家拥有最快乐 Professor Deiner 的文化。 与其他文 difference is to do 化相比,西班牙语文 with pride and 化中的荣耀感远多于 shame. Hispanic 羞耻感。” (西班牙语言 的)cultures report much more pride and much less shame than others.”

Income also made a big difference to people s happiness, 收入对人们是否快乐也有很大的影响,但这种影响只在较低层次上发挥作用 but only at the lowest levels. Average income earners in the US 在美国,中等收入者比穷人要快乐得多,但百万富翁们纸币中等收入者稍微快 were much happier than people in poverty. But millionaires were 了一点点。
在戴纳 only a little bit happier than people on average incomes. It 教授的研究中,斯堪的纳维亚国家的人最快乐,他们收入高,而且财富分配相 seems that money makes us happy when we have enough to feel 当均匀。 secure.

But can we be too happy? “You get people who are actually happy, but they think happiness is so important that they try to be even happier. This desire to be always happy is a product of individualism, where the emphasis is on you individually, your emotions and feeling good. People can end up feeling unhappy because ordinary happiness is not good enough for them.” 其实我 So happiness can be 们应该中庸一点,只有这样,有喜事发生时我们 a kind of problem, too. But at least it s the 是有个人主义带来的;个人主义强调个人,强调 kind that leaves 心情,强调自我感觉一定要好,但这种人往往最 people smiling 终会感到不快乐,因为平平常常的快乐对他们来 说已经不够了。”
