Graduate business students in the United States and
Canada are more likely to cheat on their work than their
counterparts in other academic fields, the author of a
research paper said. The study of 5,300 graduate students in
the United States and Canada found that 56 percent of
graduate
business students admitted to cheating in the past
year, with many saying they cheated because they believed it
was an accepted practice in business. Following business
students, 54 percent of graduate engineering students
admitted to cheating, as did 50 percent of physical science
students, 49 percent of medical and health-care students,45 percent of law students, 43 percent of
liberal arts students and 39 percent of social science and humanities students. “Students have reached
the point where they re making their own rules.” said the leading author Donald McCabe, professor of
management and global business at New Jersey s Rutgers University. “They ll challenge rules that

likely that more students cheat than admit to it. The study, published in the Academy of Management
Learning and Education, defined cheating as including copying the work of other students, plagiarizing
(抄袭) and bringing prohibited(禁止)notes into exams. McCabe said that in their survey comments,
business school students described cheating as a necessary measure they d likely need to succeed in the
professional world. “The typical comment is that what s important is getting the job done. How you get
it done is less important,” McCabe said. “You ll have business students saying all I m doing is
emulating(效仿)the behavior I ll need when I get out in the real world.”

Living in a foreign country is fun, but it isn t always easy. There are many differences between
cultures and although some of these differences are unimportant, some can cause a lot of
embarrassment. In addition to the obvious language problems of living in a foreign country, I certainly
experienced culture shock when I was living in London. I know I m not the only one so. I spoke to a
few foreign friends about how they experienced culture shock in China.
David arrived two months ago from Europe to take part in a language program in Shanghai. Before
he left, he was actually taught the differences between Europe and Chinese culture, including
everything from table manners to classroom behavior. However, some things have still taken him by
surprise. For example, he couldn t understand why waiters didn t want to accept the tips he gave them
after meals in restaurants. He said that in Europe waiters got angry if you didn t leave them a tip! I had
to explain to him that people usually don t tip in China and that this comes from the Confucian idea that
one must avoid accepting any undone income.
Another friend, Mary came to Guangzhou from London to teach at a language school. After a
month, she told me that she was really let down by her students. I asked her why and she told me that
they were so quiet that she was the only person talking in class and it felt like the children were
punishing her by making her talk to the walls! I explained to her that the children were simply being
respectful but she said that it would be more respectful if they answered her questions. I think we
should be proud of the Chinese tradition that stresses politeness, but I do think that Brown has a good
