1.A brief introduction to Our College

Welcome to our college. Before you start to look around,allow me to give

you a brief account of the college.

Founded in 1958, our college，covering 349.79 acres(英亩), is one of the city’s earliest colleges for. It is staffed with an excellent faculty,and has a total enrolment of over 16,000 students.In the past years, it has turned out numerous well-qualified students and found its graduates active in professions of all walks of life.

Since its establishment,the college has steered itself toward the objective

that its students have an overall healthy development. Not only does it provide the students with basic academic courses,but it manages to expose them to the up-to-date knowledge. Besides,students are free to participate in colorful campus activities and social practice, which are intended for broadening their horizons,expanding their mind and developing their potential talent.

Currently, both our faculty and students are making every effort to

improve the quality of our education in the direction of a first-rate engineering college.Thank you .

2. Keep Your Direction

What would you do if you failed? Many people may choose to give

up.However,the surest way to success is to keep your direction and sticky to your goal.

On your way to success, you must keep your direction. It is just like a

lamp, guiding you in darkness and helping you overcome obstacles on your way. Otherwise, you will easily get lost or hesitate to go ahead.

Direction means objectives. You can get nowhere without an objective in

life.You can try to write your objective on paper and make some plans to achieve it. In this way, you will know how to arrange your time and to spend your time properly. And you should also have a belief that you are sure to succeed as long as you keep your direction all the time.

1． Why People Attend College or University?

There are many advantages to a college or university education. Students have ample opportunity to explore a variety of interests, increase both their general and specific knowledge. Prepare for a chosen career and develop independence. All of these are valuable goals to achieve,bu it is my belief that most students today pursue higher education in order to prepare for their future careers.

In the past, only the rich and privileged had the opportunity to attend a university and their goals were very different. Coming from wealthy families,few of them would have to compete for a job after graduation, and most wished only to be considered well-educated. Today’s students are more practical. They must be able to

compete in a very competitive job market; therefore, a practical education is very important. Furthermore, higher education is a big investment and so most students want to get all they can out of it. For these students, it is better to have clearly defined career and education goals rather than to try and find themselves in college. Of course, all students want to increase their knowledge, but I believe that most students today want that knowledge to be relevant to their future careers.

The world has changed a great deal since universities were established. They are still wonderful places for acquiring broad knowledge and for personal development. However, in today’s competitive world these pursuits must be balanced with the pursuit of more specific goals. That is why I think most students view higher education as a valuable tool in career preparation.

4.How to Spend Your Weekend?

A great pity it is indeed that we always spend our weekends aimlessly. We generally derive no profit from the invaluable hours of weekends. Though weekend is set aside as time for rest, we ought to devise some ways of spending it .

First, we should review what we have learned during the past week. “One will get something new in looking over ones old studies” is a very wise saying. If we do not fully understand what we have been taught in the past week, how can we expect to understand next week’s lesson?

Secondly, to increase our knowledge , we should read on weekend those books, newspapers and magazines that are not in our regular curriculum.

Thirdly, we should organize ourselves into a party or a club for traveling or debating, which is very beneficial to our health and speaking faculty.

The three ways of spending weekend will surely do anyone good if he will carry them out faithfully and persistently.

5. Which Sport Do You Like?

A: Personally speaking, I prefer jogging and running on campus. It is one of the most popular and convenient ways to train your heart and keep you fit. You can jog at any time, in the morning or in the evening, whenever you feel like it . There is no limit of time.

B: But jogging or running can be very boring. I don’t like it. As far as I’m concerned, I like playing basketball. It is an excellent and exciting exercise among all sports. After class,half an hour spent on the basketball ground will remove our tiredness and strain brought on by a whole day’s work. Besides it is a sport that demands teamwork. By playing basketball, you can develop your ability to cooperate.

C: But in my opinion, this is the biggest weakness of playing basketball: you have to have some partners to play with you. On the contrary, swimming is an individual sport. You needn’t have any company. In addition, compared with other sports, swimming can help you both stay in very good physical shape and develop endurance.

A: Whether playing basketball or swimming, you need a specific playground or a swimming pool, or certain equipment. But jogging has no limit of space.
