参考答案98.CACDA DBCAB DCBCD BABCB :
Why is it that many people who have suffered a major shock, such as divorce or death of a family number, seem to be weaker against a variety of major and minor illness. One common idea among psychologists has been that people could deal with suffering more effectively if they were able to understand and accept it.:Indeed, many expels stress the value of expressing thoughts and feelings connected with upsetting events.
Recently, a team of medical researchers studied the links between describing psychologically painful events and long-term health. In one experiment healthy college students were asked to write about either personally disturbing experiences or ordinary topics over a period of four
days.In the months afterwards, students who had chosen to show their inner thoughts and feelings in their writing visited the health center for illness much less often than those who had written about everyday topics.
In an experiment that followed, another group of healthy students were given the four-day writing exercises. Some chose,to write about highly personal and upsetting experiences(including loneliness, problems with family and friends, and health). When questioned immediately afterwards, they said that they did not feel any better. However, their blood samples taken before and after the experiment showed evidence of an improved resistance to illness. The white cells that fight off bacteria and viruses had increased their reaction and sensitivity to these .This trend continued over the following six weeks, when another blood sample was taken.Individuals who showed the best results were those who wrote about topics that they had actively kept from telling others about.
The researchers suggested that failure to face up to painful experiences earl be a form of stress itself, and increase the possibility of illness. It follows, then, that actively dealing with a major shock makes possible its understanding and acceptance. The answer is not to suffer in silence. It may not always be possible to talk about personal problems, but writing them down wilt help the body to fight disease in the long run.

One of the world’s great natural wonders is in New Mexico, in the American Southwest. Nature has created huge moving hills of pure white sand. These sand dunes cover more than seventy-thousand hectares of desert.
It is one of the largest sand dune fields in the United States. The bright white sand dunes are always changing, always moving, like waves on the ocean. Driven by strong winds, the sand moves and covers everything in its path. It is like a huge sea of sand.
You may wonder how anything can live in this extreme environment of a white sand desert. There is not much rain. The heat in summer is intense. The sand lacks nutrients. Plants and animals struggle to survive. A few kinds of plants grow quickly to survive burial by the moving sand dunes. Several kinds of small animals have become white in color in order to hide in the sand.
More than five hundred thousand people visit White Sands each year. They climb on the dunes and observe the moving sea of sand.
White Sands is about twenty four kilometers southeast of the city of Alamogordo, New Macico. In the visitor center at the entrance of the park, you can find out about special activities and guided walks. You can drive about thirteen kilometers into the center of the dunes. It is like driving on a lonely white planet. Along the way there is information that tells about the natural history of the white sands.
You can also explore the dunes on foot, seeing some unusual and beautifulplants and flowers. Signs along the trail tell about the plants growing in the sand. You can even camp there ovemight. But you must be careful. It is easy to get lost in the waves of moving sand especially during sandstorms. There is no water to drink. The temperature can rise to thirty-eight degrees Celsius in summer. There is no shelter from the sun’s rays.
White Sands is part of America’s National Parks System, and it is just one of the unusual

A
When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm. In the winter especially, we were quite far away from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that my life has its problems too.
One big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma (哮喘), and the air is so serious polluted that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment (娱乐活动). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising — and , what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens (十几岁) or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon. 21. What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?
A. Staying on the farm. C. Moving to the countryside.
B. Leaving home for the city. D. Running away from the school.
22. Which of the following is true about the writer?
A. He lives in the city now. C. He prefers driving a car.
B. He is in good health. D. He is very old now.
23. In the passage, the writer tries to __________.
A. persuade the reader to live in the city B. describe his life in the countryside C. show an interest in the outside world D. express his opinions about the way of life 24. How is the passage mainly developed?
A. By inferring. C. By comparing.
B. By listing examples. D. By giving explanations.
