We didn’t always live on Mango Street. Before that we live on looms, and before that we lived on Keeler. Before Keeler it was Paulina. The water pipes (水管) on Loomis broke. That’s why we moved to Mango Street.
It’s a small and brown house with a broken front door. There is no front yard. It looks smaller between the two buildings on either side. There are two stairs in our house, but they are ordinary hallway stairs, and the house has only one washroom. Everybody has to share a bedroom.
Once a classmate passed by and saw me playing out front.
“Where do you live?” She asked.
“There,” I said pointing up to the house.
“You live there?”
“You live there?” The way she said it made me feel nothing.
“There,” I nodded.
I knew then I have to have a house on a hill like the ones with gardens where Papa works. I used to go there. I don’t anymore. I’m tired of staring at them like the hungry.
One day I will on my own house. Not a flat. Not a daddy’s house. A house all my own. Only a house quiet as snow and clean as paper. People who lives on hills sleep so close to the stars that they forget those who live too much on the earth. But I won’t forget who I’m or where I came from. The passing homeless will ask, “Can I come in, lady?” I’ll offer them a room and ask them to stay, because I know how it is to be without a house. I’ll be happy to help them.
