In the days when the earth was young and all things were better than they now are. Then men and women were stronger and of greater beauty, and the fruit was larger and sweeter than that we now eat. Rice, the food of the people, was of larger grain. One grain was big enough for a man to eat. And in those early days, this was the merit of the people; they never had to work hard to gather the rice, for when the rice was ripe(熟的), it fell and rolled(滚) into the villages, even into the granaries (谷仓).

And upon a year when the rice was larger and more plentiful than ever before, a

widow(寡妇) said to her daughter, “Our granaries are too small. We will pull them down and build a larger one.” When the old granaries were pulled down and the new one was not yet ready for use, the rice was ripe in the fields. Great haste(匆忙) was made, but the rice came rolling in where the work was going on, and the widow cried, “Could you not wait in the fields until we are ready? You should not trouble us now when you are not wanted.” The rice broke into thousands of pieces and said, “From this time on, we will wait in the fields until we are wanted.” From that time on the rice has been of small grain, and the people of the earth must gather it into the granary from the fields.

Food prices are rising. The FAO(世界粮农组织) reports that world market prices for rice, wheat, sugar and meat will go up. One reason for this is the food shortages(缺乏) caused by bad weather. Bad weather has harmed agriculture(农业) and influenced

food prices in several parts of the world.

For example, the flooding in Australia has done great damage to crops. Floods also

have harmed other vegetables and fruits. Floods could destroy up to half of next

year’s sugar crop. And prices for fruits and vegetables could likely increase over the next six months.

Last week, Russia passed a ban. The country stopped on wheat exports(出口). Heat, drought and wildfires destroyed about a third of its wheat crop last summer. The ban was to make sure Russians have enough wheat. The ban made worldwide wheat

prices climb last year by almost fifty percent.

In Algeria, the government has reduced taxes after food riots(暴乱). Among the

causes of the riots are price increases for cooking oil and sugar. Several people have died in the riots, and hundreds of others have been injured.

Mr Fan heads the International Food Research. He says countries must invest(投资) in making their farmers more productive. And the world will need to feed more

hungry people with less available land, water and other resources(资源).

( ) 16. What has harmed agriculture?

A. Bad weather. B. The market. C. Pollution. D. Food riots.

( ) 17. What did Russia do to protect their crops?

A. It started wheat exports. B. It made prices come down.

C. It developed more land. D. It passed a ban to protect their crops.

( ) 18. Price increases for ______ have caused the food riots in Algeria.

A. rice and wheat B. meat

C. cooking oil and sugar D. vegetables and fruits

( ) 19. What can we infer from the passage?

A. People must think of more ways to feed hungry people.

B. Food prices will probably come down a bit.

C. People should plant more trees to protect the environment.

D. All the countries in the world should pass a ban like Russia.

( ) 20. What does the passage mainly tell us?

A. Flooding has done great damage to crops in Australia.

B. The world is hungry and food prices are rising.

C. Mr Fan leads the International Food Research.

D. Heat, drought and wildfires destroyed crops in Russia.
